The end of the term is fast approaching and I can't believe we only have three weeks to go! Today we have been celebrating International Day at JPS which is always one of the highlights of the school year. I love to see the children performing on the stage. It makes me feel very proud that I have been involved in their learning. We will certainly be busy in the next few weeks, with the celebration of the UAE National Day on the 1st December at school. Then closely followed by the hustle and bustle of the Art Festival Preparation!
School Attendance
The poster below shows the impact on a child's learning when not attending school.
Dear Parents,
As with all aspects of school life, JPS is striving for ‘outstanding’ in attendance (≥98%), which means carefully monitoring children’s attendance and punctuality and intervening early with families of children with poor punctuality and attendance patterns.
Attendance and punctuality are essential to ensuring that your child gets the most out of their time at school. They are also important life skills that your child will need as they become young adults and enter the world of work.
The habits that children establish early in life tend to stick with them. If they become accustomed to sleeping late and coming to school only when they want to, it will establish a pattern for their future decision making. When they grow up and get a job, the habit of being absent or constantly late will cause them to lose those jobs and develop a poor work history.
Have you ever walked in on a conversation and had to ask yourself ‘What did I miss?’ because the conversation made absolutely no sense to you? That is the same thing that happens when your child misses school or comes to school late on a regular basis. Because academic skills build upon the other, if your child misses several days of school, it is likely that he/she will have gaps in their learning:
‘Children who miss school can quickly begin to fall behind their peers and often never fully catch up with gaps in their skills or knowledge. Over time, these pupils can become bored and disillusioned with education.’
(Department for Education in England, 2012, Improving Behaviour and Attendance in Schools).
For further guidance on what ‘outstanding’ attendance is, please see the poster.
We thank you in advance for your cooperation in ensuring your child’s punctuality and attendance is ‘outstanding’.
